Egypt’s Public Works and Water Resources Ministry is shortlisting international consultants for a contract to prepare a feasibility study for the refurbishment of the Asyut barrage on the Nile. Contractors are meanwhile being shortlisted for a separate project to build a new barrage at Naga Hammadi, upstream from Asyut.
Both schemes are being financed by Germany’s Kreditanstalt für Wiedera-ufbau (KfW), and the client for both projects is the Ministry’s Reservoirs and Grand Barrages Sector.
Fifteen groups of consultants applied for the Asyut contract, and the aim was to prepare a shortlist of five which were expected to be formally invited to bid for the contract before the end of 1999. About forty companies applied to pre-qualify for the Naga Hammadi scheme and the client was preparing a shortlist of eight companies for this project. The consultancy team for Naga Hammadi consists of lahmeyer International from Germany, Sogreah from France and electrowatt Engineering Services from Switzerland.
