Sydney Morning Herald cited sources familiar with the matter as saying that the Indian miner asked Parsons Brinckerhoff and POSCO Engineering & Construction to stop work on the Carmichael mine, rail and port project.

Parsons Brinckerhoff is the principal consultant of the project, and POSCO Engineering & Construction was selected to build 388km rail line for the project.

The company said that it had to take the decision to suspend the operations due to delays in government approvals for the project.

Carmichael coal project was scheduled to start its first phase and had already signed deal to sell 70% of the coal produced from the mine.

Reuters cited Adani as saying: "The preliminary works contracts were previously sustained due to the level of investment Adani had maintained for more than 12 months in anticipation of a range of government decisions and approvals timeframes."
