The low power RF remote meter reading system helps the company reduce carbon foot print involved in a typical meter reading exercise, it said.

The company installed meters with RF communication, data concentrator units (DCU), head end software and meter data acquisition system (MDAS) in about 5,000 residential and commercial complexes in Mumbai city.

RF mesh network communication collects meter data every hour and transmits it to a central server using GPRS network for automated generation of bills.

Tata Power COO and executive director Ashok Sethi said: "We are thankful to our partners in helping us achieve this remarkable feat and also benefit the environment by lowering the overall carbon footprint and reducing on the man-hours in operations."

The project is being supported by Larsen & Toubro, Cyan Technology and Neosilica Technologies.

Separately, Tata Power Delhi Distribution (TPDDL) has commissioned a new 66kV gas insulated switchgear (GIS) sub-station at Prashant Vihar, Rohini in Delhi.
