EIB Warsaw office head Piotr Michalowski was quoted by Reuters as saying that the funding will be used by the company for one project in electricity distribution and another project in gas-based power generation.

"We are ready to maintain and even increase the loan volumes for the energy sector in Poland," Michalowski said.

PGE is planning to invest around PLN50bn ($13.1bn) on new capacity and upgrading existing power infrastructure by the end of this decade.

Separately, Poland’s power firm Tauron is also seeking around $209m loan from the EIB to fund for the construction of PLN1.5bn ($393.9m) gas-fuelled unit at its Lagisza power plant.

"These are initial talks, I assume we will finish them this year," Michalowski noted.

EIB anticipates the new law, which is expected to be announced in early 2016, to regulate support for renewable energy sources in the country. Itwill lead to investments in renewable sector.

"If, in accordance with the latest draft, it turns out that the projects will have support granted for the next 15 years, then it will for sure make it easier for us to decide on financing new investment," Michalowski added.

Michalowski said the EIB would invest at least €5.5bn in Poland this year.

EIB provided Polish power producers with PLN1.7bn ($446.4m) of loans. from 2010 to 2014.
