The pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) is designed for the unit 3 of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India’s (NPCIL) power station.

The nuclear steam generator allows heat transfer from primary side heavy water to generate steam thereby facilitating turbines to generate electricity.

L&T board member and Heavy Engineering president Kotwal said: "The completion of first 700 MWe PHWR steam generator is a major milestone towards ‘Make in India’ vision."

The steam generator features low alloy quenched and tempered steel with nickel-iron-chromium alloy tubes and stainless steel internals.

L&T was also responsible to develop critical internals, including stainless steel grid support flats, mist extractors and special adhesives and fasteners.

In 2009, L&T was awarded a contract by NPCIL to provide main plant civil works of reactor 3 and 4 at Kakrapar facility.

The scope of work under the contract also included reactor building, auxiliary buildings, waste management and exhaust ventilation building, heavy water upgrading plant, fabrication and erection of structural steel works involving civil, structural and architectural works.

India expects to increase its nuclear power generating capacity to 10,080MW in 2017. The country also aims to generate 20,000MW nuclear power by 2020 and 63,000MW by 2032.

L&T is engaged in technology, engineering, construction, manufacturing and financial services with operations in over 30 countries worldwide.
