Caterpillar dealer Finning (UK) Ltd. has installed a combined heat and power (CHP) system at Bristol Royal Infirmary in the UK to provide power and heat for the hospital.
The unit comprises a Caterpillar genset, boiler and associated equipment. The boiler was lifted into position by a 500 t crane, one of the largest mobile cranes in the country.
Finning designed and installed the system, supplying a Cat 3516 natural gas fuelled genset, boilers, control panel, electrical transformer, switchgear and remote control via telemetry. The company will also provide a comprehensive maintenance service.
The Cat generator is designed to run 24 hours per day, subject to gas availability, and will produce up to 1 MW of electrical power. Waste heat from the generator will produce 920 kg/h of steam from the boiler, which will also be fired independently to produce a total of 7920 kg/h. The steam will be used by six hospitals on the site for heating, hot water and sterilization applications. Hot water will also be piped to the University of Bristol for heating.
The LIMA telemetry system enables engine performance control by Finning engineers via VDUs both on site and at its Windsor control centre. When LIMA identifies a potential failure, it alerts the control centre that action is required.
