Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsui have won an order from Malaysian utility Tenaga Nasional Bhd to build a natural gas fired power plant. The 45 bn yen project involves upgrading the Port Dickson power station in Kuala Lumpur and is scheduled for completion in 2004. It is being financed under a Yen loan programme from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation agreed in 1999, believed to be the first Yen loan extended by a government institution to Malaysia in five years. Power demand in Malaysia rose by 6 per cent last year. The Japanese construction company are hoping to win a contract for a second stage upgrade at Port Dickson.
