Australia
GE Power Systems has signed an 11 year service agreement valued at more than US$17 million with Osborne Cogneration Pty of Adelaide, S. Australia. Under the agreement GE will provide total maintenance for one of their own MS9001E gas turbines, together with a steam turbine and generators at a 180 MW cogeneration facility in Adelaide. The plant is jointly owned by ATCO Power Australia Pty Ltd and Origin Energy Power Ltd.
Brazil
Brazilian nuclear energy company INB has won a R$250 million order from the navy’s Technological Centre to manufacture and install uranium enrichment cascades over a period of eight years. The new processing plant is expected to save the country R$280 million in imports of enriched fuel from Europe.
China
The joint venture Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, started up in April this year, has won three major orders already. Two are for hydro projects in Portugal, the third is in connection with the 18 200 MW Three Gorges hydro power project in Central China – which when constructed will be the world’s largest hydro power station – where the company is to supply an exciter system for the fourteen 700 MW generators of the first phase.
France
GE Power Systems has been awarded a contract worth around US$23 million to supply a gas turbine generator for a new 100 MW cogeneration plant at Vitry sur Seine. GRE will supply an MS9001E gas turbine, a T900B generator and will install and commission the equipment. A joint venture company formed by Compagnie Parisienne de Chauffage Urbain (CPCU), a local utility, and Cogetherm of Paris will own the natural gas plant which will produce electricity for Electricité de France and 400 tonne/hr of steam for CPCU’s district heating system. It is scheduled to come on line in November 2001.
India
The 85 million Euro contract to build a 160 MW combined cycle power plant at Hazira, Gujurat State, has been won by Alstom Power, who will supply two 58 MW GT8C2 gas turbines, a steam turbine, two heat recovery steam generators and ancillary equipment. The customer is Gujurat State Energy Generation Ltd, and the new plant is scheduled to enter service in early 2002.
Luxembourg
The European Investment Bank has announced a loan of 80 million Euros to Twinerg SA for the construction of a 350 MW natural gas fired combined cycle power plant at Esch-sur-Alzette. The plant will be owned and operated by Twinerg, and its construction is a joint venture between their owners Cegedel and Sotel and Belgian power generation company Electrabel SA. Luxembourg’s first major thermal plant, it is due for completion in late 2001 and will provide about a third of the country’s consumption.
Phillipines
First Gas Power Corporation of Manila, a joint venture company involving Lopez Inc., First Phillipine Holdings Corp. and British Gas, has ordered a 500 MW combined cycle power plant from Siemens Power Generation Group. Notice to Proceed has been issued for the new plant, which will be situated at Santa Rita adjacent to the existing1000 MW station, also constructed by Siemens. The US$500 million project will involve the installation of two 250 MW blocks, in single shaft configuration, each equipped with a gas turbine, steam turbine, generator, and heat recovery steam generator.
South Korea
Dresser-Rand has been selected by the Bokuk Electric Industrial Company Ltd to supply the gas turbine generator package for the standby power system to be used in South Korea during the next World Cup finals. The system will be installed at the Pusan City football stadium, now under construction, one of ten World Cup venues in Korea and Japan. Dresser-Rand’s facility in Norway will supply a KG2-3E gas turbine for the package which will be capable of supplying 2.25 MW of standby power.
Turkey
Agreements are being finalised, with closure expected before the end of the year, for the construction of a 780 MW power station to be built in Ankara. The BOO contract, to last 16 years, will be carried out under an agreement signed in 1998 with the Turkish Electricity Generation and Transmission Corporation. National Power of the UK, overall project leader, is finalising agreements with Alstom for engineering, procurement and construction services. The concession holders include the local companies Bayindir and Mimag, who will be responsible for bulding the plant, while Alstom will provide the turbines.
UK
Vickers Specialist Engines, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce, has won preferred bidder status for the Ministry of Defence’s Field Electrical Power Supplies, which runs a fleet of 1300 mobile generator sets for the British army. The contract is expected to be worth in excess of £100 million over a 15 – 20 year term. Vickers and the MOD are likely to sign in early 2001.
Npower has awarded a 9 million Euro order to Alstom for the supply and maintenance of a 12.9 MW gas turbine plant to be located at the Hunstman Tioxide plant in Grimsby. The generating set will the first Cyclone unit in the UK to incorporate a dry low emissions combustion system with dual-fuel capability; it will incorporate a waste heat boiler and steam turbine providing 80 tonne/h of steam for the turbine and manufacturing process and 23 MW of electricity.
USA
A £3 million contract to supply four 500 tonne boilers to Alstom Power Inc for heat recovery steam generators in the USA has been awarded to BDT Engineering of Wakefield, UK. Three of the boilers are destined for new power stations in Connecticut while the fourth will go to Massachusetts.
A five year supply contract has been agreed between Woodward Governor Co and GE Power Systems. The contract, worth US$500m in all, is for the supply of fuel and combustion control systems and components for GE's range of industrial gas turbines.
Alstom power has been selected by Potomac Electric Power Co as equipment, procurement, and construction contractor for the turnkey supply of a 21.75 MW cogeneration plant for the National Institutes of Health site in Bethesda, Maryland. At 7 million sq ft this is reputedly the largest medical research facility in the world. The contract covers a dual fuel GT10B generator with heat recovery. The plant is scheduled to enter operation in March 2003.
