Transelectrica SA, the national transmission company of Romania, has awarded a contract worth $37 million to ABB for the engineering and construction of a high voltage substation to transmit power from Slatina in the southern part of the country to consumers 250 km to the east in Bucharest, and to a nearby aluminium smelter. Under the deal existing equipment will be replaced incrementally in order to reduce disruption to the power supply. ABB will deliver two large power transformers, associated switchyard equipment and computerised protection and control equipment. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2005.
