Shanks waste services site at Brogborough, UK, is to become one of the largest reciprocating engine powered generation sites in Europe utilising methane gas from landfill. Mirrlees Blackstone has supplied a KVP16 engine to the site , adding to the two KP7 and one KVP16 dual fuel engines already there. The installation will provide an additional 6.7 MW(e) if power and the engine is presently undergoing final commissioning trials.
The latest KVPI6 will bring the total site output to over 17.5 MWe.
Following a successful trial of the existing engines this further contract was awarded on a turnkey basis, which included a single bay extension to the existing station.
Gas for the new facility will be drawn from a new location on site and for this purpose Shanks have provided a new gas compressor compound equipped with two new reciprocating compressors, with facilities for a third unit to be added at a later date. The project is funded under a UK government non fossil fuel obligation grant, which guarantees revenue for energy generated by non fossil fuels, and is in this instance valid for a period of 15 years from commissioning.
