Amazon and Iberdrola have expanded their global renewable energy partnership with an additional 476MW of power purchase agreements (PPAs), extending their collaboration to five countries.

The new agreements include Amazon’s first PPA in Portugal, securing 219MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex, the country’s largest wind farm, set to begin construction in early 2025.

The partnership has also grown in Spain, where two utility-scale PPAs have been agreed for a total of 257MW of solar and wind energy. Collectively, these projects- Ciudad Rodrigo Solar PV Plant and Valdemoro Wind Farm- are expected to generate 1,093 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of carbon-free electricity annually—enough to power approximately 300,000 homes per year.

Originally established in 2022, the partnership between Amazon and Iberdrola includes agreements on renewable energy procurement and cloud services. With the latest additions, Amazon has now contracted more than 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola across all signed PPAs worldwide.

In August 2024, Iberdrola selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider for generative artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, expanding their collaboration. By leveraging AWS’s AI capabilities, Iberdrola’s distribution business is enhancing grid connection processes for new energy supply points. The company’s renewables division is also using AWS’s computing power to optimise wind farm layouts by simulating wake effects.

Additionally, Iberdrola is employing AWS High Performance Computing (HPC) to improve the accuracy of weather forecasting across its 400 wind farms globally. Future initiatives in 2025 include developing a Virtual Desktop as a Service platform on AWS, incorporating Amazon WorkSpaces, and deploying an AWS Landing Zone to facilitate the migration of critical workloads to AWS’s Spain region.

Amazon’s renewable energy PPAs are part of its goal to match 100% of its electricity consumption with renewable energy as it works towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040.

Amazon EMEA Energy director Lindsay McQuade said: “Amazon is committed to driving the carbon-free energy transition forward, both to advance our Climate Pledge goals, and support Europe’s transition to more sustainable energy sources.

“We are excited to further support Iberdrola in its growth plans, leveraging the scalability and services of AWS in data and AI. We are working with Iberdrola to provide a modern virtual desktop platform for their employees and drive innovation across business lines to accelerate innovation and delivery, and achieve our goals faster.”
