Skyborn Renewables, TotalEnergies, and their partners, have officially inaugurated the 640MW Yunlin offshore wind farm located off the west coast of Taiwan.

The project, which has commenced full operations is expected to deliver renewable electricity to approximately 600,000 homes across Taiwan. It is also estimated to reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 1.2 million tons annually.

The Yunlin offshore wind farm has been designed to produce around 2.4TWh of renewable energy annually.

Germany-based Skyborn Renewables leads the partnership with a 31.98% stake in the offshore wind farm, while TotalEnergies holds a 29.46% stake. The other partners in the project holding company, Yunneng Wind Power, are EGCO Group and Sojitz, which hold stakes of 26.56% and 12%, respectively.

Skyborn Renewables spearheaded the development and construction phases with support from the other stakeholders. Following the anticipated commercial operations date (COD) in June 2025, TotalEnergies will assume responsibility for technical operations, while Skyborn Renewables will maintain oversight of additional management tasks.

Skyborn Renewables CEO Patrick Lammers said: “The Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm is not any project: It is one of Taiwan’s largest offshore wind farms and Skyborn’s first operational project in APAC.”

Located in the Taiwan Strait, approximately 15km off Taiwan’s western shoreline, the Yunlin offshore wind farm operates at water depths reaching up to 35m. It consists of 80 turbines, each with an 8MW capacity.

The electricity generated is integrated into Taiwan’s power grid through two long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Taiwan Power Company (TPC), priced at an average of $165 per MWh. Electricity from the wind farm is delivered to the grid through substations near Taixi and Sihu in Yunlin County.

The Yunlin offshore wind farm is supported by a financial consortium comprising local and international banks alongside export credit agencies. In 2019, financial close on the project was achieved and in April 2021, the first turbine was installed.

Construction on the Yunlin offshore wind project was wrapped up in December 2024 and in January 2025, full energisation was achieved.

TotalEnergies renewables senior vice president Olivier Jouny said: “This 640MW project will help us achieve our 2025 targets for 35GW of gross renewable capacity and over 50TWh of net electricity production, amounting to 10% of TotalEnergies’ energy output.

“Our role as technical operator on Yunlin will allow us to strengthen our offshore wind competencies as we look ahead to our future projects in Germany, Denmark, and the UK.”
