The contract was awarded by PDAM Tirtanadi, the Water Corporation of the Province of North Sumatra.
As per the terms of the contract, Suez will build, operate and transfer the water production plant extension for a period of 25 years. The extension will include the construction of two additional water production units at the Medan plant.
Medan is the third largest city in the country. The project is expected to improve drinking water access to the fast-growing population of the city and will contribute to the local authorities’ ambition of supplying more than 84% of the population with drinking water by 2020, as compared to the current percentage of 73.2.
In 2001, the company finalized the first phase of the Medan drinking water production plant building, which has been in operation since.
The plant has a production capacity of 43,200 m3/day of drinking water, which is supplied to the 150,000 inhabitants of the North Sumatra Province capital. With the plant’s extension, the production capacity is expected to reach up to 77,760 m3/day.
As part of the contract, Suez will install two degremont compact drinking water production units (UCD). The company stated that the modular solution can increase production in a fast and simple manner and claims that it is in compliance with the local regulations.
Each of the unit is made up of interchangeable modules for lower civil engineering costs and rapid installation without impacting existing structures.
Suez says that the engineering and construction period of the units will end in 2020, followed by a 25 year operating period.
Suez Group Deputy CEO in charge of International segment Marie-Ange Debon said: “With this contract, SUEZ is strengthening its presence in the water management industry in Indonesia, where the Group has built over 150 water production and sanitation plants since 1953.
“The Group currently operates water production plants and provides drinking water services to the inhabitants of Medan (Sumatra) and Semarang (Java). Since late 2015, SUEZ has also treated wastewater from Michelin’s synthetic rubber production plant in the region of Cilegon.”
