Siemens Gamesa has secured a turbine contract valued at over £1bn from ScottishPower for its 960MW East Anglia TWO offshore wind farm in the southern North Sea.
Located approximately 33km off the Suffolk coast, the offshore wind farm entails an investment of £4bn.
The East Anglia TWO project is part of the 2.9GW East Anglia Hub. Other offshore wind farms in the hub include East Anglia ONE North and East Anglia THREE.
Once operational, the East Anglia TWO offshore wind farm will have the capacity to power approximately one million households with renewable electricity.
Upon completion, the offshore wind farm is projected to operate for up to 25 years.
Under the terms of the contract, Siemens Gamesa will deliver 64 SG 14-236 DD turbines, each with a rotor diameter of 236m.
The project will involve the manufacturing of 115m-long turbine blades in the Hull facility, where Siemens Gamesa currently employs 1,300 local people. This initiative aims to boost British manufacturing.
In addition, ScottishPower’s investment in the East Anglia hub is expected to support thousands more jobs.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “Our mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower will fire up our industrial heartlands and break down barriers to growth in our hard-working towns and cities.
“It will strengthen our national security – protecting our children and grandchildren from the climate crisis, and impact this will have on their future prosperity.
“By acting decisively and early, the UK has an opportunity to lead the world in the industries of the future – working in partnership with businesses like ScottishPower and Siemens Energy – creating real energy security, cutting energy bills and building jobs and supply chains in the UK.”
ScottishPower’s projects in the East Anglia region, which will all be using Siemens Gamesa turbines, are collectively expected to meet the electricity needs of over three million homes.
The contract aligns with ScottishPower’s plans to increase its UK investment from £12bn to £24bn between 2024 and 2028.
The East Anglia TWO project succeeded in the UK government’s Contracts for Difference Allocation Round 6 (AR6) in September 2024. This achievement came more than a decade after seabed rights were initially awarded.
Last week, ScottishPower awarded contracts for the transportation and installation of offshore wind turbine generators (WTG) and foundations at the East Anglia TWO offshore wind farm to Cadeler.
