Brazil
l Following its involvement in the first phase of the project, ABB has won a US$250 million order to build the second phase of a power transmission system connecting Argentina and Brazil. The contract has been awarded by Companhia de Interligacao of Brazil and specifies a 1000 MW link to interconnect two substations with a 490 km ac line and an HVDC converter station.
Dubai
l Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has contracted with an Italian consortium led by Enelpower, and including Fisia Italimpianti, for phase two of the Jebel Ali K power and desalination complex. The contract, worth around US$590 million, calls for the supply and installation of 850 MW of electricity generation together with a desalination capacity of 40 million gallons per day. Enelpower is project leader by virtue of supplying the power island, which will include three Siemens gas turbines. Italimpianti will be in charge of the desalination works.
Indonesia
l PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara has appointed the Duke/Fluor Dasniel affiliate PT Nusantara Power Services to provide operations, maintenance and management services for the 160 MW Batu Hijau generating facility serving PTNNT’s copper and gold mining operations on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa.
Israel
l An Alstom/NEM/GEA/ABB consortium has won an order worth over 90 million Euros to convert Israeli Electric Corporation’s existing 400 MW gas fired open cycle power plant at Hagit, in south-east Haifa, to combined cycle operation. The project is part of the Israeli government’s energy supply programme designed to meet the country’s growing power needs. Alstom, whose share of he order is 40 million Euros, will supply two 111 MW turbogenerator sets for the Hagit plant including the water/steam cycle and ancillary and auxiliary systems. In addition they will be responsible for overall management, engineering and delivery of the other major components.
Commissioning of the two units is scheduled for mid 2002.
Oman
l The 4 September deadline for bidding for the independent Barka power and desalination project was met by three groups – AES Corporation (USA), National Power of the UK, and TotalFinaElf with Tractabel (Belgium). The plant is to have a generating capacity of 400 – 440 MW and a desalination capability of 3800 m3/hr. But this is only the first phase. The site near Muscat is large enough to accommodate four such phases and the development programme suggests the completion of a second phase in 2005.
Peru
l Electrowatt Engineering (Peru) S.A. has secured the supervision contract for construction of two peak energy reservoirs for the Canon del Pato power station 400 km north of Lima. The combined storage volume is 650 000 m3, to meet the needs of a plant recently upgraded from 154 MW to 240 MW.
Sri Lanka
l GE Power Systems is to supply a gas turbine generator and auxiliary equipment to the Marubeni Power System Corp. of Japan for a new combined cycle power plant in Kelanitissa.
UK
l Guernsey Electric Board, in the Channel Islands, has ordered a Cyclone gas turbine generating set, black start diesel generator and transformers from Alstom Power in the UK for installation at the Vale Power Station. The generating set will be used in a simple cycle configuration to provide emergency standby and peak lopping capacity for the island. The Cyclone will operate on liquid fuel and is to incorporate a dry low emissions combustion system to keep NOx and CO emissions down to 50 ppmV.
l Peter Brotherhood, the UK based steam turbine manufacturer, has won a £1.5 million order to supply a 12.7 MW turbo-alternator set for a new power station in Slough. The power station is being built by Slough Heat and Power to supply the national grid.
USA
l UK power hire group Aggreko has been awarded a contract (of undisclosed size) to supply power to the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The contract will call for the provision of specially designed portable electric distribution systems on a scale to supply enough power for a city of 2 million people, in harsh weather conditions at altitudes of over 8000 feet.
l Besicorp-empire Development Co of New York has appointed The Washington Group as owner’s engineer for its US$680 million cogen project in Rensselaer, NY. The development will be an integrated recycled newsprint manufacturing and combined cycle cogeneration power plant producing 500 MW of electricity and 300 000 tonne of recycled newsprint per year. AGRA Simons Ltd of Vancouver, a subsidiary of UK engineers AMEC, will act as owner’s engineer on the recycled newsprint contract.
Zambia
l Chinese construction company China Henan International has been awarded a a US$26.6 million contract to renovate Zambia’s main power plant at Kafue Gorge. The three year contract starts this autumn and work will include the removal of aquatic weed, repairing tunnels, shafts and spillway gates and re-surfacing nearby roads.
Cogen plant opened
Innogy Cogen’s 58 MWe combined heat and power plant at Bridgewater Paper Co Ltd, Ellesmere Port, UK, was officially opened on 22 September by local MP Andrew Miller. The plant entered service on 31 May, precisely on schedule; it will supply all the electricity and steam requirements of the Bridgewater Mill under a 15 year supply contract, replacing an existing coal and oil fired steam boiler plant that was unable to meet the tougher emissions regulations due to be legislated by the UK government next year.
ABB selected for RPG generator
Regional Power Generators (UK) has selected ABB Energy Information Systems to supply NETA (new electricity trading arrangements) compliant trading systems for its 272 MW Glanford Brigg combined cycle gas turbine power station at Brigg, North Lincolnshire. The ABB ‘genesisplus’ system replaces an existing ABB trading solution.
