BP, through its subsidiary bp Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT) has started production at its Cypre gas development located off the coast of Trinidad.
Located in the East Mayaro Block, approximately 78km southeast of Trinidad, the subsea project is part of BP’s broader upstream growth strategy. It is one of 10 major developments of the company, which are scheduled to begin operations between 2025 and 2027.
The Cypre field is wholly operated by bpTT, which is jointly owned by BP (70%) and Repsol (30%).
Developed in two phases, the Cypre project consists of seven wells tied back to bpTT’s existing Juniper platform. The first phase, involving four wells, concluded in late 2024.
The second phase is slated to begin in the latter half of 2025.
At its peak, the Cypre gas development is projected to produce approximately 45,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. This is equivalent to around 250 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
BP expects Cypre to be a significant contributor to the combined peak net production target of 250,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from its 10 global upstream projects.
bpTT president David Campbell said: “Cypre is another key milestone in bpTT’s strategy to maximise production from our shallow water acreage using existing infrastructure.
“The project not only reinforces our commitment to maintaining production but also plays a crucial role in satisfying our existing gas supply commitments. Cypre represents a significant investment in the country’s energy sector.”
This marks BP’s second upstream start-up of the year, following the launch of production from the second phase of the Raven field in Egypt. The Cypre project aligns with BP’s capital allocation plans and meets its financial return thresholds for upstream ventures.
The subsea development was supported by Subsea Integration Alliance, which includes Subsea7.
In November 2022, Subsea7 was awarded a contract covering the concept design, engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of the gas tieback system. This included the deployment of dual flexible flowlines, a manifold gathering system, and topside modifications to the Juniper platform.
bpTT confirmed its intention to move forward with the Cypre project in September 2022. At that time, the company projected peak gas output between 250 million and 300 million standard cubic feet per day from the development.
The Cypre project represents bp’s third subsea gas development in Trinidad and Tobago and continues the operator’s use of subsea tieback infrastructure to enhance existing offshore facilities.
