DEME has secured contracts worth over €300m for the transport and installation of 112 foundations at the 1.6GW Nordlicht offshore wind farms in Germany.

The company has also been awarded the contract for scour protection at both projects.

Under the contracts, DEME will install 68 foundations at Nordlicht 1 offshore wind facility in 2026, followed by 44 foundations at Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farm in 2027.

For this purpose, multiple vessels of DEME, including the company’s offshore installation vessel Orion, will be deployed..

Orion is equipped with a 5,000-ton crane and motion-compensated pile gripper, enabling efficient installation even in challenging weather conditions.

DEME North Europe business unit director Bas Nekeman said: “We look forward to collaborating with Vattenfall and BASF, whose clear commitment to driving the transition to sustainable energy aligns well with DEME’s ongoing efforts to offer innovative solutions for the evolving energy landscape.”

Located 85km north of Borkum in the German North Sea, the Nordlicht offshore wind project zone comprises the 980MW Nordlicht 1 and 630MW Nordlicht 2 wind farms.

The projects are being developed by Vattenfall, with chemical company BASF holding a 49% stake.

Once operational, the German offshore wind farms are expected to generate approximately 6TWh of electricity annually. This will be sufficient to supply clean energy to 1.7 million households.

The Nordlicht offshore wind farms are also anticipated to contribute towards Germany’s renewable energy transition.

The contracts remain subject to a final investment decision. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with full commissioning expected by 2028.

Other key suppliers for the Nordlicht projects include EEW SPC, which will manufacture 141,000 tonnes of monopile foundations at its Rostock facility in Germany, and CS WIND Offshore, which will supply transition pieces.

Jan De Nul has been contracted to install 196km of inter-array cables using its cable installation vessel Connector.

Vattenfall and BASF previously awarded contracts to Vestas for the supply of wind turbines. Havfram was awarded contract for low-carbon transport and installation while TKF has the contract for inter-array cables.

Production of key components is set to begin in late 2025, pending the final investment decision.

Vattenfall Nordlicht 1 executive project director Cyril Moss said: “DEME’s proven expertise in German waters and their advanced installation capabilities give us full confidence in the safe and timely completion of the Nordlicht foundations. This collaboration is key to delivering reliable, renewable energy to millions of households.”
