An equally owned joint venture (JV) of Hindustan Construction Company Limited (HCC) and Tata Projects Limited (TPL) has secured a contract valued at approximately INR24.7bn ($286.42m) from Tata Power Company.

The contract pertains to the construction of the Bhivpuri Off-Stream Open Loop Pumped Storage Project (PSP) with a capacity of 1,000MW located in Karjat, Maharashtra, India. The PSP will feature two 333MW units and two 167MW units.

The scope of works under the contract encompasses civil and hydro-mechanical components of the project. This includes the construction of a cofferdam, intake structures with gates and screens at the existing Thokerwadi upper reservoir, head race tunnels, penstock, surge shaft, pressure shaft, powerhouse, tail race tunnel, and lower intake structures.

Additionally, the contract covers the creation of a new lower reservoir featuring a GFRD dam, access adits, roads, drains, various balance of plant foundation and building structures, as well as associated infrastructure works. The JV will also oversee the review and coordination of electro-mechanical works essential for the project’s completion.

In a stock exchange filing, HCC said: “HCC has served the nation in the development of nearly 26% of installed hydropower capacity and is currently executing five hydroelectric power projects, including the 1,000MW Tehri Pumped Storage System in Uttarakhand.

“This latest win by HCC further cements its position as a leading partner in the development of hydropower projects for the country.”

Last month, Tata Power signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance renewable energy development in the Indian state of Assam.

The company will collaborate with the state government to establish up to 5,000MW of renewable and clean energy projects, including solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage, with an estimated investment of INR300bn ($3.42bn) over the next five years.
