Kinder Morgan’s subsidiary, Tennessee Gas Pipeline (TGP), has taken a final investment decision (FID) on the Mississippi Crossing Project (MSX Project), a $1.4bn natural gas pipeline project in the US.
The decision follows the signing of long-term, binding transportation agreements with customers for the project’s full capacity.
The Mississippi Crossing Project is designed to deliver up to 1.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day (Bcf/d), addressing growing demand in the southeastern US.
It will involve the construction of 331km of new pipeline, comprising 286km of 42” diameter pipeline and 45km of 36” diameter pipeline.
Kinder Morgan natural gas pipelines president Sital Mody said: “This transformative project will benefit the Southeast region as it will provide incremental access to diverse sources of supply.
“The additional supply will help satisfy growing energy demand and lower energy costs, allowing power generators and other energy suppliers in the region to attract new residential, commercial and industrial opportunities.
“We are in final discussions with customers for up to an additional 0.4Bcf/d of long-term commitments, which would require additional capital for incremental horsepower.”
Two compressor stations and related facilities are also included in the project’s plan. The pipeline will originate near Greenville, Mississippi, and end near Butler, Alabama, connecting with existing TGP infrastructure and third-party pipelines.
The proposed route will cross several counties in Mississippi, including Humphreys, Sunflower, Washington, Attala, Holmes, Clarke, Leake, Newton, Lauderdale, and Neshoba.
In Alabama, the Mississippi Crossing Project will pass through Choctaw County. The infrastructure is expected to facilitate access to natural gas from multiple supply basins.
According to Kinder Morgan, the project aims to address rising natural gas demand driven by growth in power generation, liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, and traditional residential and commercial use. The pipeline expansion is expected to enhance transportation capacity and supply reliability for the region.
Pending regulatory and environmental approvals, the Mississippi Crossing Project is anticipated to commence operations by November 2028.
Tennessee Gas Pipeline operates one of the largest interstate natural gas pipeline systems in the US, with approximately 18,950km of pipeline transporting gas from multiple production basins across 15 states.
Kinder Morgan CEO Kim Dang stated that the company has now approved approximately $3.1bn of its share in expansion capital, covering the SNG South System 4 Expansion and the Mississippi Crossing Project. Dang added that the company anticipates announcing additional projects in the coming months.
