The largest ever geothermal generation equipment contract, $85 million, has been awarded to GE by Italian power giant Enel through its renewables subsidiary Erga. It is part of an eight plant expansion and upgrading project planned for the Tuscany region and will bring the area’s total geothermal capacity up to around 200 MW. This is itself the beginning of an $800 million investment plan to be carried out by Erga, intended to increase its renewables capacity in Italy by 40 per cent over the next five years. Erga is currently the world’s largest producer of electricity from renewables, with over 2300 MW of generation in Italy and north America.
