Substation

Electricidade de Mozambique (EdM) owns and operates the substations, which will extend the transmission network in Mozambique.

Under the deal, ABB will rehabilitate and extend nine existing transmission substations that will assist to reinforce the grid.

The contract also includes the design and supply of engineered packages for the high-voltage air-insulated switchgear (AIS) substations.

ABB will supply circuit breakers, gas and air insulated medium voltage switchgear, IEC 61850 based open control and protection systems, and high-voltage equipment.

ABB Substations business head Oleg Aleinikov said, "These substations will help to extend and strengthen the grid, enhancing power supplies to meet the increasing demand for electricity and contributing to economic development."

ABB said demand for reliable power in Mozambique is increasing at a rate of 10% to 15% per year due to industrial growth, construction activity and overall economic development.

The national power grid currently supplies about 5000MW of electricity with over 90% of the capacity owned and operated by EdM.
