The new 6.5 mile submarine cable system is part of the Bayonne Energy Center power generation and transmission project.

The power facility will generate 512MW of power generation capacity for transfer through the ABB cable system to a Con Edison substation in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

The power plant will provide cleaner, more reliable power for Manhattan and the New York City power transmission network and is scheduled to start production later this year.

The cable system connects the power plant to the substation and delivers the power at extra-high voltage across New York Harbor.

The cable system includes three single-core XLPE submarine cables, each 6.5 miles in length, and two XLPE underground cable segments that connect the submarine cables to the power plant.

The system was completed and energized by ABB in December 2011.

Caldwell Marine International under a subcontract with ABB performed construction work at the landing sites and the laying of the cables at a depth of up to 15 ft.
