Developed by Solvay Technologies, Solar Impulse is a solar-powered aircraft that was first launched in the year 2013.
The solar aircraft was developed using Solvay products such as lightweight plastics, battery components, lubricants, insulation and solar panel film coatings.
Under the partnership, ABB will support the Solar Impulse team in achieving the challenge of circumnavigating the globe in a new solar-powered plane, which will be launched in 2015.
ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer said that this partnership brings together two Swiss-based global leaders that are passionate about pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation to achieve a better world.
"We believe in Bertrand’s vision, and we are convinced that by pioneering innovative technologies we will be able to decouple economic growth from energy consumption and environmental impact," added Spiesshofer.
