PGCB plans to expand six existing substations and build four new 132/33kV substations at Rangamati, Khagrachori, Bianbazar and Sunamganj.

The move is part of Bangladesh’s ongoing Power Systems Expansion and Efficiency Improvement Program, which intends to enhance the country’s generation, transmission and distribution systems.

The program will increase capacity, improve efficiency and power reliability as well as reduce environmental impact.

About 450,000 households are expected to receive new power connections through the program, which will reduce around 2.5 million tons of carbon emissions per year.

The contract requires ABB to design, supply, install and commission the substations.

ABB will deliver power transformers, high- and medium-voltage switchgear, control and protection equipment, and substation automation systems.

ABB Power Systems division head Claudio Facchin said: "These substations will help increase transmission capacity and deliver more power to meet the growing demand for electricity, and will also strengthen grid reliability."

PGCB managing director Masum-Al-Beruni said: "We are happy to partner with ABB as we invest in strengthening the country’s power infrastructure for the future, and we hope to benefit from the technology leadership that ABB has to offer."

ABB has earlier implemented various projects including a 230kV switchyard, 132/33kV substations and 230/132kV substations and is currently executing a 230kV substation at Bibiyana for PGCB, Bangladesh.
