Scope of the contract includes the plants’ design, engineering, installation and commissioning, in addition to various supporting products and technologies.

The orders were obtained from two special purpose entities, Core Energy and Erika Energy, with global solar energy company Sun Edison as its majority stakeholder.

The solar plants support the South African government’s long-term renewable energy program and have a combined installed capacity of 64MW.

ABB’s Power Systems division head Brice Koch commented, "Our vast experience in supplying high-efficiency PV power plants, combined with our local capabilities and presence will enable us to deliver best-in-class solutions and support the country’s vision to integrate renewable energies."

ABB will also build the substation and connect it to the power grid.

The plants will have a combined capacity to provide 130GWh of electricity anually, enough to power 36,000 South African homes and offset 130,000 tons of CO2.
