Under the contract, ABB will design, engineer, supply and commission the 25km 220kV AC submarine line and related offshore substation cable.

The company will also provide engineering services and deliver 32km of AC underground onshore cabling and associated substation cables, cable joints, accessories and terminations.

ABB power systems division head Claudio Facchin said: "Offshore wind is making an increasing contribution to boost the share of renewables in Europe’s energy mix and this project will support the UK Government’s efforts in this area.

"ABB has considerable experience in executing such projects and the technologies to support the efficient integration of renewables into the grid."

The extension facility will be located next to the existing 90MW Burbo Bank wind farm, which is situated on the Burbo Flats in Liverpool.

The extension covers 40km² area and will sit to the west of the operational facility in Liverpool Bay, about 7km north of the North Wirral coast.

Upon completion, the Burbo Bank Extension offshore wind farm will generate enough energy for about 240,000 households.

ABB said Burbo Bank receives the entire force of the wind from the Irish Sea in the west, making it an ideal location for offshore wind power generation.
