The power and automation technology group will design, supply and commission its 420kV GIS solutions at new substations which are being constructed in Hunterston and Wishaw, and support the upgrade work of the existing substation at Torness.

ABB’s Power Systems division head Brice Koch stated, "These substations will help integrate and deliver clean wind energy to the people and strengthen the transmission grid in the region."

The company said its 420kV GIS features a smaller footprint and reduces the amount of SF6 insulating gas required, making it more environmental-efficient.

The GIS technology will help in projecting key components, including contacts and conductors with insulating gas.

The latest project is part of the Scottish government’s efforts to increase the share of wind power as part of its renewables portfolio in the country.

In 2011, the nation had met 35% of its electricity demand from a generation mix including hydro, wind, wave, tidal, solar and biofuels.
