These substations will support the first phase of the new facility being constructed by Hung Nghiep Formosa Hà Tinh Steel, a subsidiary of Formosa.

Located about 400km south-east of Hanoi in the Vung Ang Economic Zone, the steel complex which spans 3,300ha will house four steel furnaces with a combined output of over 15mt per year.

The new facility will also have a 1,600MW thermal power plant and the Son Duong deep-water port with an annual throughput of 30mt.

ABB Power Systems division head Brice Koch noted, "These substations will enhance power transmission capacity and improve quality and reliability of supply for critical processes and sustain productivity at the new steel complex."

Two blast furnaces would be developed with a capacity of 4,300 cubic meters each in the first phase of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2014.

The latest complex will produce hot-rolled steel sheets and high-tech steel bars. The company will be responsible for the design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the substations.

In addition, the power and automation group will deliver the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, telecommunications equipment and the substation automation, control and protection systems.
