ABB for one of the two projects would replace and maintain interlocking equipment that guarantees the safe operation of switchgear at three substations and a power station in Cape Town. In order to protect, control and supervise the high-voltage transmission network, ABB would also supply REF 545 feeder terminals.

The company, for the other project, would supply medium-voltage equipment, which includes 12 kilowatts (kV), 24 kV and 36 kV rated compact gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and ancillary equipment for nine substations in Cape Town. This second project would be provided with approximately 200 GIS ZX1.2 panels.

The two projects, as part of Cape Town’s growth and infrastructure upgrade plans, are planned to be completed by the end of 2010.

Claudio Facchin, global head of ABB’s substation business, said: “Upgrading these installations will help strengthen grid reliability and improve the quality of power supplies in the area.”
