ABB said that while the power cables at the bottom of Skagerrak Strait were in good condition, the control system was a concern for its operators, Energinet.dk of Denmark and Statnett of Norway.

The Swiss firm won a contract to provide its Mach 2 protection and control system, which it claims is specifically designed to work with high-voltage direct current and flexible alternating current transmission systems. The Mach 2 units were shipped to the converter stations in Norway and Denmark in the first half of 2007. ABB completed the replacement work within the two-week deadline.

Energinet and Statnett subsequently resumed responsibility for the link’s operations in November 2007.
