Power and automation technology group ABB has won orders worth $56 million from Algeria’s state-owned power company, Sonelgaz, to supply two substations and 10 mobile substations.

ABB has said that one 60kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) will replace an existing installation in the country’s capital, Algiers, to meet demand for electricity. A second 60kV GIS will be installed in Oran to supply electricity for a planned recreational and commercial development in the area.

According to the company, the mobile substations can be used to replace fixed installations temporarily. This enables utilities to carry out maintenance work, respond rapidly to outages and restore power supplies quickly. They can be transported by road trailer and be up and running in less than 24 hours.

Furthermore it said that the company will design, engineer, supply, install and commission the substations, including switchgear, power transformers, automation and telecommunications, as well as other auxiliary systems.

Peter Leupp, head of ABB’s Power Systems division, said: ABB’s new technologies are enhancing the performance and reliability of power systems around the world. GIS substations are compact and are the preferred option for use in urban environments.
