Abengoa handled the engineering, construction and commissioning of the plant for PV operator Silver Ridge Power under a $365m contract.

Located in the city of Calexico, the project covers 801ha area and includes over three million PV modules that rotate on a north-south axis tracking the path of the sun.

The solar plant will generate enough power for around 72,000 homes in San Diego and its surrounding area.

The facility, which is claimed to be the largest single-axis PV plant in the world, will reduce 356,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

The Mount Signal project, which created over 700 direct jobs in the area, was completed in 16 months.

Abengoa is currently working on several projects in the US that account for 28% of its business.

The company is currently developing the 280MW Mojave Concentrating solar power plant in California, which it anticipates to put online in mid-2014, and a new PV project for EDP Renewables (Madrid).
