Considered to be the largest wind farm in the country, it will be located in Reynosa, in the state of Tamaulipas, in north-eastern Mexico. The wind farm is estimated to be built with an investment of $600m.

The wind farm is part of Mexico’s second long-term electricity auction held in last September, by the Mexican government's Secretariat of Energy (SENER) and its National Energy Control Centre (CENACE).

Zuma Energia had won the bidding for the construction of 725MW of renewable energy capacity, out of which 424MW will be covered through the Reynosa wind farm.

Zuma Energía CEO Adria´n Katzew said: "This is a major achievement for Zuma: in just three years it has established a pipeline of 800 MW, secured funding for its largest project and positioned itself as the leading Mexican company in the country's renewable energy industry.

“This is also solid evidence of the transformation of Mexico's energy industry, where renewable energy is growing in importance in both economic and environmental terms."

The project also includes the installation and testing of the civil engineering work, the medium-tension network, the power off-take system and the interconnection with the electricity grid.

The wind farm will include 123 turbines, each with a power producing capacity of 3.45-3.6MW. These turbines will be installed on 120m towers. The wind farm is expected provide clean energy to about one million Mexicans, while offseting about 739,000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

Acciona will construct the foundations for the towers of the turbines. It will also install medium voltage 34.kV network for the whole wind farm, a 400kV high voltage network with three substations, and and 40km of double-circuit lines.

Acciona Industrial Mexico director Eduardo Marcos Llavallol said: "Our experience in the energy industry and in large-scale projects enables us to undertake a landmark project such as Reynosa with full assurance of success.”
