The hydroelectric works contract worth nearly €110m follows the already existing €50m construction contract for the penstock at the Gouvães hydroelectric plant.
Spanish conglomerate, Acciona will take part in the Alto Tâmega dam’s construction. Besides, it will construct a 106.5m high double-curvature concrete arch and a toe-of-dam hydroelectric plant featuring two 80MW units.
Acciona has also been contracted to build the Alto Tâmega hydro power plant's water circuit, river diversion works, and access tunnel among others.
For the penstock at the Gouvães project, the Spanish firm will build a 4.7km concrete-lined tunnel of 7.3m in diameter. The tunnel will be dug simultaneously across four points.
In the Gouvães reservoir on the Torno River, Acciona will build the water inlet structure along with the sluice structure and other ancillary components.
In addition to the Alto Tâmega, Gouvães projects, a third hydroelectric power plant of dubbed Daivões will be part of the 1.15GW Tâmega River project, which is considered to be one of the biggest hydro power projects in Europe in recent times.
Put together, the three hydro power plants enable the Spanish electric utility Iberdrola.to produce over 1,760GWh of electricity each year.
The Tamega River project is being built on the Tamega River in northern Portugal, near the city of Porto. Investment involved in the project is €1.5bn and it is expected to create 3,500 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs during the construction stage.
