Power generated from the Hussein CCGT plant will be supplied to National Electric Power under the 25-year power purchase agreement.

Planned to be built in Zarqa Industrial Area in Jordan, the facility will replace the country’s first thermal power station, Hussein Thermal Power Station, which was decommissioned recently.

The $460m new power plant will feature GE Energy-built 9E turbines and uses natural gas as primary fuel, and light diesel oil as the secondary fuel.

ACWA Power president and CEO Paddy Padmanathan said: "This transaction goes a long way in demonstrating our commitment to the socio-economic development of Jordan and in supporting NEPCO through provision of electricity reliably at the lowest possible cost in Jordan."

Central Electricity Generating Company (CEGCO) of Jordan will be responsible for operations and maintenance of the Hussein facility, which will be built by Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation III (SEPCO III).

ACWA Power said that the project is expected to ensure no effective job losses due to the decommissioning of Hussein project.

ACWA Power chief investment officer Rajit Nanda said: "We are proud to have offered an extremely competitive solution to NEPCO with a tariff that is among the lowest witnessed in Jordan’s conventional power sector in the last decade."
