The Queensland Government approved the North Galilee Basin Rail project in mid-August this year; however, the project was subject to consent from Environment Minister Greg Hunt.

The latest approval mandates Adani to submit a biodiversity offset strategy at least two months before commencing the works.

Adani Mining CEO Jeyakumar Janakaraj was quoted by Reuters as saying: "Today’s approval is a significant milestone in the life of our integrated mine, rail and port project, helping transition from approvals to the build phase."

Work on the project will take two years to complete and is expected to create around 2,400 jobs. The rail line will transport 100 million tons of coal each year.

The project will bring in around $790m for the Mackay region, and over $900m for the state economy.

Adani has faced protests from the environmental groups for developing mines in the Galilee Basin over concerns that it would increase flooding in the region.
