The group is also concerned that the proposed project would put at risk biodiversity in the region, endanger black-throated finch and the Great Barrier Reef.

Opponents argued that the environmental costs for the project will be significant and its economic benefits have been overstated.

Coast and Country spokesman Derec Davies said that the project poses unacceptable dangers and risk to Queensland and should be rejected by the government.

Adani defended the claims saying that the project will support the region with 10,000 jobs and billions to state economy.

ABC quoted Davies as saying, "We don’t think all of the evidence has been brought before an assessing body.

"Through this five-week court case and our 11 experts it will be the first time all the technical assessments and the facts and circumstances will be brought in front of an assessing body of the Queensland Government."

Said to be one of the largest in the world, the open cut and underground mine will be spread over 45,000 hectares, and is expected to produce at least 50 million tons of coal a year.
