South Field Energy, a subsidiary of Boston-based energy development company Advanced Power, has unveiled its plan to construct 1,100MW natural gas based power plant in Columbiana County, in US, with an investment of $1.bn.

Planned to be built on less than 20 acres of land located approximately three miles from the Village of Wellsville, the new facility is similar to Advanced Power’s 700MW Carroll County natural gas electric generation facility, which is currently under construction near Carrollton.

The project is expected to create 550 construction jobs for up to three years, and will employ 25 full-time employees once operational.

Advanced Power development senior vice president Jonathan Winslow said: "Ohioans face a growing gap in energy production.

"With facilities like this, we can begin to close that gap by using advanced technology to produce substantial, reliable power, while also minimizing our environmental footprint."

Bechtel will serve as general contractor for the project, which will feature General Electric’s (GE) flexible and efficient gas turbine technology.

Earlier, Bechtel was selected by Advanced Power Bechtel for the engineering, procurement, construction, and start-up of the Carroll County Energy project, which will supply power to more than 740,000 US households.

Construction of the facility already started in July and is planned to be completed in 2017.

The Carroll County Energy project will supply electricity to regional transmission organization PJM Interconnection.

The facility, which will be fueled primarily by clean natural gas, will have option to operate on ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) in order to ensure reliable operations during unavailability of gas.

Winslow said that project is currently in the process of completing environmental studies and is due to secure necessary permits to commence construction.
