The commission will only approve the extension if the comprehensive evaluation currently underway concludes the operation extensions to be completely safe, said Deputy Commissioner Hsieh Te-chih of AEC.

Nuclear reactors no. 1 and no. 2 of the nuclear power plant no. 1 in Shemen Township of Taipei County are due for closure on December 5, 2018 and July 15, 2019, respectively.

Taipower said that operating under the proposed service extensions would cost only about one-tenth of the construction of new reactors.

In the coming future, Taipower may apply for service-life extensions for the four reactors at nuclear power plants no. 2 and no. 3, scheduled to be shut down between 2021 and 2025.
