The company’s division, Aecon Utilities, had participated for this contract through a 50-50 joint venture, comprised of Aecon and Robert B. Somerville.

The project work includes the installation of 560km of underground pipeline for the distribution of diluent between Edmonton and Fort McMurray, as well as engineering support and constructability reviews.

Aecon chief operating officer Teri McKibbon said this large award showcases the high demand for pipeline construction services in Western Canada.

"We look forward to working with Somerville on this significant project for Inter Pipeline," McKibbon added.

Work is slated to begin in January 2013 and is expected to complete in 2016.
