The companies decided to suspend plans for further development of the high-voltage power line after being directed by regional grid operator PJM Interconnect to delay the project amid concerns over the slow economic recovery.

PJM is conducting a rigorous analysis of the potential need for the PATH project as part of its continuing Regional Transmission Expansion Plan.

AEP chairman and CEO Michael Morris said that the company supports a thorough and detailed analysis of the need for the project.

"We remain convinced that the project will be needed and plan to move forward with it when PJM completes its review," Morris said.

PATH is a joint venture formed by AEP and former Allegheny Energy to build a 765kV, 275-mile transmission line from Putnam County, West Virginia, to Frederick County, Maryland.

Allegheny Energy merged with Akron-based FirstEnergy last week.
