According to John Ayodele, executive director of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) presently operated by Afam Power, the contracts were to restore GT 18 and the GT diagnostic inspection of GT 13 by ALSTOM. One of these contracts was to rehabilitate one of the units which was approved for award, last week. The intention of the contract was to increase the capacity of the unit to 75MW.

Afam, from its facility, intends to add a total of 200MW to the national grid by the end 2009, said Ayodele, who supervised the contract signing ceremony.

Of the total contract value of EUR10 m, EUR8.9m would be used for material portion and EUR1.1m for manpower services.

Ayodele, said: “We are hoping that there will be no more downturns in Nigeria that would make our partners run away. Before December 31, the 6,000MW would have been achieved. I hope ALSTOM will leave up to expectation.”

Mike Nwogu, chief executive officer of Afam Power, said: “The commissioning of GT 18 will add 75MW to the national grid by November 2009. The unit was built and commissioned in 1982 by ABB now ALSTOM.”
