Angelina Fuels, the sister company of Aspen Power, will provide the plant with approximately 1,500 tons of biomass per day from timber harvesting, sawmill and municipal cleanup activities in and around Lufkin.

The new biomass facility, which will be connected to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) electric grid, will serve as a base load provider generating a steady flow of renewable power for the grid. The new facility is expected to create approximately 50 new jobs for local residents.

The development of the facility is in line with Texas’ new Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) goal that requires investor-owned and municipal utilities to develop 10,000MW of renewable energy capacity by 2020 with at least 500MW generated by non-wind resources.

Travis Windholz, director of Akeida, said: “The Aspen Power facility is a unique source of renewable energy in the state of Texas. We are excited to participate in this landmark project which will add substantially to the local economy, support sustainable waste management practices and improve forest health.”
