The company has secured all the required approvals and permits to start construction on the station, located in Marshalltown, Iowa.
KBR will serve as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the project, which is anticipated to start commercial operation in the second quarter of 2017.
After completion, the station is anticipated to power over 500,000 homes in the region.
Alliant Energy senior vice president of generation John Larsen said, "Construction of MGS is a key part of our company’s long-term energy resource plan that further balances our energy supply while reducing emissions."
Alliant Energy’s Iowa utility unveiled a long-term energy resources plan in August 2012 to meet its customers future energy needs and further balance its energy supply and reduce emissions.
The plan included investments to reduce emissions and increase efficiency of the company’s existing coal-fired generating units.
Construction of MGS and closure of older and less efficient coal-fired generating stations are also included in the plan.
