Under the contract, Alstom will install 200MW BHEL-supplied LMZ design steam turbines at unit 4 of the 1,350MW Ukai power station and unit 3 of the 1,470MW Wanakbori power station.

Scheduled to be completed in 2017, the scope of work under the contract will cover engineering, supply, erection, commissioning and testing activities.

The new installations will help enhance the turbine’s efficiency by around 14%, and reduce coal consumption and CO2 emissions, Alstom said.

Alstom Middle East and India thermal services managing director Steven Miller said: "Improving efficiency of aging coal power plants not only boosts the competitiveness of these units, but because coal is the largest fuel in India, is also key to limiting climate change."

The company will manufacture the equipment at its facilities in India and Poland.

In India, there are more than 50 BHEL-supplied LMZ design 200 / 210MW steam turbine units.
