Planned to be built in Jacobina city, the plant will produce 200 steel towers per year.

The plant, which is expected to start operations in the second half 2014, will receive investments of about €30m.

Alstom will offer 49% of investment costs required for the plant while Andrade Gutierrez will bear the remaining cost.

Alstom Brazil country president Marcos Costa said: "It’s very important to the local customers to have suppliers close to the wind farms.

"It can reduce the logistical costs, delivery time and guarantee the security in transporting this large kind of equipment. It can bring even more efficiency in the process."

Andrade Gutierrez aims to increase the quality assurance of the wind power projects in Brazil with the help of new factory.

The plant will be Alstom’s third wind unit in Latin America following the first in Camaçari, also in Bahia State, and the second facility in Canoas, Rio Grande do Sul state.

Alstom said it is also supporting to develop the supply chain of components for towers, nacelles, hub and blades.

The company has installed over 2,600 turbines in more than 200 global wind farms, supplying in excess of 5,000MW of energy.

Alstom designs and manufactures 1.67MW to 6MW turbines for onshore and offshore wind power projects.
