Carried out in collaboration with AEP, the modernization enhances the power quality of the local electricity network, simultaneously augmenting production and lowering maintenance costs for Roanoke Bar Division of Steel Dynamics (SDI) located in Roanoke, Virginia, US.

Specifically, the work included upgrade of a Static VAr Compensator’s (SVC) major components with with modern replacements, engineered, manufactured and tested at the company’s FACTS Center of Excellence in Philadelphia, US.

The company also installed motor control center, thyristor valve assemblies, a cooling system, and a harmonic filter in the outdoor yard.

Alstom Grid North America president Michael Atkinson said modernization of US’ power grid forms one of the most prominent themes in the national dialogue on the need for smarter, more resilient infrastructure.

”This project demonstrates how enhancing existing systems with the latest technologies can advance that push for more modern infrastructure while delivering tangible bottom-line benefits for utilities and their end customers,” Atkinson added.

The company is also responsible for provision of service and maintenance support for the upgraded equipment to Appalachian Power over the next five years.
