The substations will establish a reliable grid in Tamil Nadu as the state saw 6% increase in energy consumption between 2004 and 2011.
The state’s energy consumption is expected to increase another 7% during the Twelfth Five Year Plan 2012-2017.
Alstom said its air-insulated substations will transmit the new generation capacity along the grid.
The three projects will establish a 400/230/100 kV air-insulated substation at Rasipalayam, linking Tamil Nadu’s transmission network to India’s national grid.
Plans also include two 230/110 kV air-insulated substations in Vyasarpadi and in Omega Industrial estate, both located near Tamil Nadu’s capital city, Chennai.
Alstom will deliver 62 air-insulated bays, two power transformers, eight auto-transformers and other equipment under the contracts.
Alstom T&D India managing director Rathin Basu said: "Alstom is proud to play a key role in the transmission network of the state of Tamil Nadu.
"With its advanced transmission technologies and strongly localised manufacturing footprint, Alstom T&D India is ready to support the state government’s plans to strengthen the transmission network backbone, and to distribute quality power efficiently to the consumers."
