Under the €58m contract signed with Chinese company Sinohydro, Alstom will provide six 100MW Francis turbine-generator sets and related equipment for the project.

Alstom Hydro China (AHC) will be responsible for the equipment design, manufacturing, supervision to the installation, commissioning, testing and site services.

The largest hydropower project in Uganda is located along River Nile in the districts of Kiryadongo and Oyam, 15km downstream Karuma falls.

Once operational, the project is expected to provide 40% of Uganda’s total power supply while significantly contributing to the economic growth.

Alstom Renewable Energies Hydro senior vice-president Jacques Hardelay said: "This contract further reinforces Alstom’s leading position in Africa’s hydropower market thanks to our advanced technology and long standing expertise in hydro power and we are honored to be able to contribute to Africa’s power development plan."

Alstom has previously supported Sinohydro’s Bui hydropower project in Ghana and Soubre project in Côte d’lvoire.
