The agreement covers three projects. The first project involves turnkey supply of a power plant at Bassorah in southern Iraq. Alstom will provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the power plant that will consist of three oil-fired steam units, each with a power generating capacity of 400MW. The project also includes supply of 400kV and 132kV gas insulated substations.

The second project concerns the rehabilitation of a gas-fired power plant at Najaf, consisting of three GT13D gas turbines with an overall generating capacity of 180MW. The third project focuses on the supply and supervision of 400kV gas insulated substations and 132kV gas insulated and air insulated substations in various locations in Iraq.

According to Nuri al-Maliki, prime minister of Iraq, the country will build up its electricity sector, which has been badly damaged in recent years, to meet its growing electricity needs.
